What is PACE?
PACE stands for - PREVENTION AWARENESS COUNSELLING EVAULATION.
PACE Diabetes Project is the brainchild of Dr. Mohan's Diabetes Specialities Centre and Madras Diabetes Research Foundation supported and is funded by the Chennai Willingdon Corporate Foundation.
Why PACE?
Diabetes, with its acute complications, has become a major health hazard in India. World Health Organisation (WHO) projections show that at present 32 million Indians have diabetes, but half of them are not aware of it. This number is expected to swell to 80 million by the year 2030. In the Chennai Urban Rural Epidemiological Study (CURES) conducted by us, which involved a large representative sample size of 26,001 in Chennai of individuals aged 20 and above, 15.5 % of the population were found to be affected by diabetes. It was even more disheartening that 25% of the total study population said that they had never heard about a condition called diabetes! Moreover, only 22% knew that diabetes was preventable and only 11.8% attributed obesity and / or physical inactivity as a cause of diabetes. The findings of the CURES study demonstrated that awareness and control measures for diabetes are still grossly inadequate and hence the need for an awareness on diabetes and its complications.
PACE Diabetes Project inaugurated on 24th September 2004 by Dr.Alan Cherrington, President American Diabetes Association (ADA) will be initially conducted for a period of three years but is likely to be extended further. |
